FRIDAY NIGHT TRIOS - WEEK #25

ELM Trio: 5 - VACANT: 2

We had the vacant team on our schedule this week. The league rules require that we score better than 45 pins below our average to earn a win against a vacant team. With the sum of our averages being 535, a score of 490 would earn a tie and 491 or better would be needed to earn a win.

We did well enough to win the first two games games but we fell off a cliff in the third and took a loss. It's a good thing the league rules don't provide that we bowl against three vacant bowlers' scores with a handicap or we would have earned only one win and a tie for a 3-4 score. As it was, we won two games plus the point for total pinfall. 

Ordinarily, coming out 5-2 would be satisfactory but when it's against a phantom team and all we had to do is average 164 to earn a win, it has to be considered a flop. Our record improved to 19-30 but we're still way off the pace.

FRIDAY NIGHT TRIOS - WEEK #24

ELM Trio: 0 - Mile High Club: 7

This week we met the Mile High Club on lanes 5-6. They were certainly a mile high after they finished sweeping us. Our second half record slipped to 14-28. If we're going to make a move on first place, we'd best not delay it any longer.

Next week we have the vacant team on the schedule. We have to finish at 490 (45 pins below the sum of our averages) to earn a tie. A score of 491 or higher will earn a win. With the bar set that low, we should be able to attain a sweep. Anything less than a sweep will have to be considered a failure.

FRIDAY NIGHT TRIOS - WEEK #23

ELM Trio: 2 - Honey's Biotches: 5

Honey's Biotches were on the schedule this week and an unusually heavy volume of oil was on the lanes. Heads were shaking throughout the league at the sight of missed headpins, washouts, and light hits. I finally woke up and switched out my Primal Rage for my Raptor Talon after the first game. It made a huge difference. I wish I'd figured out the lane condition sooner.

Honey's Biotches won the first game by 39 pins as we muddled our way through the unfamiliar lane conditions. We picked ourselves up in the second game but so did they and we found ourselves down two games and 51 pins. We pulled out the third game but by only ten pins. The result was a score of 2-5.

We were in 12th place with a record of 12-16 after 22 weeks. Our second half record slipped to 14-21 which will no doubt drop us below 12th place. Next week we will be on lanes 5-6 with Mile High Club.

FRIDAY NIGHT TRIIOS - WEEK #22

ELM Trio: 5 - Elements: 2

We started slowly and lost the first game by a mere three pins. Thankully, we bowled much better in the second and third games. Winning the final two games by margins of 167 and 77 earned us the point for total pinfall and a 5-2 victory in the series.

Our record for the second half improved to 12-16. Next week we'll be on lucky lanes 13-14 to take on Honey's Biotches.

FRIDAY NIGHT TRIOS - WEEK #21

ELM Trio: 0 - Rudy's Hot Mamas: 7

We swung back to the other extreme with our third consecutive series ending in a sweep. Unfortunately, we were on the losing end of the sweep for the second time in three weeks. We never really got rolling and we finished the night without any 200 games or 600 series. Our opponents, Rudy's Hot Mamas, bowled quite well at the same time we were off our game. That's usually a lethal combination.

Our second half record fell to 7-14. Can we sweep our way back to .500 in week #22?

FRIDAY NIGHT TRIOS - WEEK #20

ELM Trio: 7 - Bowled & Beautiful: 0

We had a rematch with The Bowled & The Beautiful whom we faced two weeks ago in the position round. They humbled us 5-2 in our previous match but this time we bowled much better to earn a sweep. We bowled a 1545 series the first time and 1710 in the rematch. That best explains the difference betwwen the two matches.

Even though we grabbed all seven points in the match, only the first game was a runaway. The second and third games were extremely tight and went right down to the final shots of the 10th frame.

With the sweep, we evened our second half record at 7-7. It feels good to get out of the basement. Next week we'll take on Rudy's Hot Mamas on lanes 19-20.

FRIDAY NIGHT TRIOS - WEEK #19

ELM Trio: 0 - Irish Mob: 7

We started the second half of the season in much the same way we ended the first. Unfortunately, that means we were once again crushed. This time we were swept by The Irish Mob. Phil and Tim of Irish Mob had exceptional series and we weren't able to match them.

It was as nearly a scratch series as the handicap was only one pin. The Irish Mob didn't need it as our highest score of the night wouldn't have beaten their lowest.

We have won only one game in the past four weeks and our record during that span is 2-26. Obviously, we're in last place for the second half with a record of 0-7.

FRIDAY NIGHT TRIOS - WEEK #18

ELM Trio: 2 - Bowled & Beautiful: 5

Our swan dive of the past two weeks nearly took us out of a shot at first place. For tonight's position round, we found ourselves in fourth place. We needed to sweep The Bowled & The Beautiful and hope for Irish Mob to take four of seven from Cleo's Trios so we could leapfrog back into first place.

Our hopes were dashed as we came out flat in the first game. We weren't much better in the second and we found down two. We finally pulled out of our funk to win the third game and stop our losing streak at ten. It was a small consolation as we finished the first half in fourth place. At the end of the night we found it wouldn't have mattered how we bowled because Cleo's Trios flattened Irish Mob to cement their spot in first place.

We'll have to regroup and win the second half so we can take on Cleo's Trios on sweeper night for the league championship. If we don't bowl any better than we have over the last month, we can forget it.

We were poised to grab the first half title two weeks ago. After week #15, our record was 63-32 and we'd held onto first place for most of the season. The following two weeks, we came out flat and failed to win a point. In week #16 we put up our lowest score of the season by far and we were flattened by Lucky 13. We brought our scores up a bit in week #17 but it wasn't enough to keep up with the red hot OJ's.

Week #18 is the position round and we find ourselves riding a losing streak of 14. Our record has dropped to 63-46. By falling flat on our faces, did we cost ourselves a shot at first place? We won't know until we see the stat sheet on January 10th.

We were on lanes 13-14 and the conditions on lane 13 were difficult to read. Both teams had trouble striking on that lane and this kept the scores low until Eli broke through in the final game. Is lane 13 really unlucky?

We came close to earning a sweep but Dream Team pulled out the last game. We held onto the point for total pinfall for a 5-2 series.

We bowled well, exceeding our average by 3.7 pins. That should be good enough for a winning series, right? Not this time. Cliff of Let's Have Fun came out on fire. We were down 0-2 after the first two games. Luckily for us, Cliff cooled off in the third game so we could pull out one win and the point for total pinfall.

With a 3-4 series, our record now stands at 68-30. We entered the night in second place, one point behind The Bowled & The Beautiful. I don't know how they fared.

We had a week off for the Thanksgiving holiday and came back to find ourselves back in a tie for first place. However, we also came back rusty as we put up our lowest score of the season by far.

We Are Here To Win  were on the schedule and we had to spot them 89 pins. Somehow we won the first and third games despite our poor performance. We lost the second game scratch and with the handicap added, the loss was big enough to cost us the point for total pinfall.  The outcome was a 4-3 series which left our record at 65-26.

Hannah was the only Highlife Roller present and she managed to to pull out a win in the first game. We won the second and third games along with the point for total pinfall to earn our third consecutive 5-2 series. Our record is 61-23.

We don't bowl next week because of the Thanksgiving holiday but Eli and I are planning to come out for some practice. We'll be back in action on December 6th for Week #13. Our first half position round will be in the 18th week, on Janaury 11th, 2014.

In a repeat of last week's series, we came close to a sweep but were thwarted in the second game by a narrow margin. Last week it was Danny striking out in the tenth frame to beat us -- this week it was Ted. With another 5-2 series under our belts, our record for the season stands at 56-21. I don't know how our closest competitors fared this week.

Next week we face the Highlife Rollers. Randy Miller's recent death (heart failure) has left Hanna and Loretta bowling with a vacant spot on their roster.

We weren't particularly sharp but we were consistent with scores of 537-532-535. We came close to earning a sweep of Let It Roll. Danny's four clutch strikes to end the second game gave them the edge and held us to 5-2 for the night.

We entered the night in a first place tie with The Bowled and the Beautiful at 46-17. They won all seven points in their match which gives them a record of 53-17. We fell two points behind them at 51-19.

We bounced back from last week's 3-4 series to sweep Team Thermo. We were fortunate to catch Bob Seright on a rare off-night. Otherwise, we might have been scrapping for two or three points.

Next week we face Let It Roll. I expect we will be surrendering a substantial handicap. Let's see if we can build some momentum and get another winning streak going.

We came out hot in the first game, missing our season's high score by only two pins. Unfortunately, it was all downhill from there. After we won the first game, Les Beauzolais (minus Flaco) took the next two. Our margin of victory in the first game was enough to earn us the extra point for total pinfall so our record for the night was 3-4.  

For the season, we fell to third place with a record of 39-17. The Bowled & The Beautiful swept their opponents and are now in first place at 43-13. Cleo's Trio won 5 of 7 to move past us into second place at 40-16.

This was our first week on the losing end. We didn't bowl poorly -- our total pinfall was 18 higher than it was last week when we were 5-2. Nancy and Leroy bowled very well for Cleo's Trio and they took it to us in the first two games. We turned it up in the third game to avoid a sweep but not high enough to grab the point for total pinfall.

Our record for the night was 2-5 which dropped up into a first place tie with The Bowled & The Beautiful at 31-11.

We had the vacant team on the schedule which required us to bowl within 45 pins of our team average to avoid a loss. This meant we had to reach 504 for a tie and 505 or higher for a win. Anything below 504 would be a loss. We cleared the 504 hurdle with ease in the first two games but we barely pulled it off in the last one. But as the saying goes, a win is a win.

With the seven points we earned this week, we improved our record for the season to 31-4 as we maintained our hold on first place.

Elm Trio: 5 - Mile High Club: 2

Entering Week #4, our record was 19-2 which gave us a two-point lead over Highlife Rollers at 17-4. Our opponents this Friday night was Mile High Club with a record of 4-17.

We spotted Mile High Club 47 pins per game in handicap which they didn't need in the first game. We got off to a slow start and they beat us scratch 479-462. With the handicap it was 526-462. Fortunately, we bounced back in the final two games and won by scores of 655-489 and 662-494. We won the point for total pinfall by a score of 1779-1509.

I can testify that Ray is an excellent teacher. Before I met Ray, my average had been hovering around the 170s for years. After some lessons and some new equipment, my average has moved into the 190s. (My present book average is 197.) OPENING THE 2013-2014 SEASON

We're off to a hot 19-2 start.

The 2013-2014 season for the Friday Nite Trios at Castro Village Bowl is underway. We opened the new season with Rudy's Hot Mamas and eared a 7-point sweep. It helped that Rudy was a bit off his game, bowling about 125 pins under his average. Whatever the reason, we're happy to break out with a 7-0 record.

In the second week, we faced Les Beauzolais and scored a second consecutive sweep. This boosted our record to 14-0.

Our performance fell off a bit in week #3. We weren't particularly sharp but we pulled off two wins. However, our winning streak stopped at 8 games as we slumped to a score of 484 in the final game of the series. Honey & The Flaming Bees took advantage and dealt us our first loss of the season. We earned the extra point for total pinfall which gave us a 5-2 record for the night and 19-2 for the season.
