FRIDAY NIGHT TRIOS - WEEK #15 RESULTS

ELM Trio: 5 - Dream Team: 2
We were on lanes 13-14 and the conditions on lane 13 were difficult to read. Both teams had trouble striking on that lane and this kept the scores low until Eli broke through in the final game. Is lane 13 really unlucky?

We came close to earning a sweep but Dream Team pulled out the last game. We held onto the point for total pinfall for a 5-2 series.

FRIDAY NIGHT TRIOS - WEEK #14 RESULTS

ELM Trio: 3 - Let's Have Fun: 4
We bowled well, exceeding our average by 3.7 pins. That should be good enough for a winning series, right? Not this time. Cliff of Let's Have Fun came out on fire. We were down 0-2 after the first two games. Luckily for us, Cliff cooled off in the third game so we could pull out one win and the point for total pinfall.

With a 3-4 series, our record now stands at 68-30. We entered the night in second place, one point behind The Bowled & The Beautiful. I don't know how they fared.

FRIDAY NIGHT TRIOS - WEEK #13 RESULTS

ELM Trio:            4
We Are Here To Win:  3
We had a week off for the Thanksgiving holiday and came back to find ourselves back in a tie for first place. However, we also came back rusty as we put up our lowest score of the season by far.

We Are Here To Win  were on the schedule and we had to spot them 89 pins. Somehow we won the first and third games despite our poor performance. We lost the second game scratch and with the handicap added, the loss was big enough to cost us the point for total pinfall.  The outcome was a 4-3 series which left our record at 65-26.

FRIDAY NIGHT TRIOS - WEEK #12 RESULTS

ELM Trio: 5 - Highlife Rollers: 2
Hannah was the only Highlife Roller present and she managed to to pull out a win in the first game. We won the second and third games along with the point for total pinfall to earn our third consecutive 5-2 series. Our record is 61-23.

We don't bowl next week because of the Thanksgiving holiday but Eli and I are planning to come out for some practice. We'll be back in action on December 6th for Week #13. Our first half position round will be in the 18th week, on Janaury 11th, 2014.

FRIDAY NIGHT TRIOS - WEEK #11 RESULTS

ELM Trio: 5 - Kalifornia Roll: 2
In a repeat of last week's series, we came close to a sweep but were thwarted in the second game by a narrow margin. Last week it was Danny striking out in the tenth frame to beat us -- this week it was Ted. With another 5-2 series under our belts, our record for the season stands at 56-21. I don't know how our closest competitors fared this week.

Next week we face the Highlife Rollers. Randy Miller's recent death (heart failure) has left Hanna and Loretta bowling with a vacant spot on their roster.

FRIDAY NIGHT TRIOS - WEEK #10 RESULTS

ELM Trio: 5 - Let It Roll: 2
We weren't particularly sharp but we were consistent with scores of 537-532-535. We came close to earning a sweep of Let It Roll. Danny's four clutch strikes to end the second game gave them the edge and held us to 5-2 for the night.

We entered the night in a first place tie with The Bowled and the Beautiful at 46-17. They won all seven points in their match which gives them a record of 53-17. We fell two points behind them at 51-19.

FRIDAY NIGHT TRIOS - WEEK #9 RESULTS

ELM Trio: 7 - Team Thermo: 0
We bounced back from last week's 3-4 series to sweep Team Thermo. We were fortunate to catch Bob Seright on a rare off-night. Otherwise, we might have been scrapping for two or three points.

Next week we face Let It Roll. I expect we will be surrendering a substantial handicap. Let's see if we can build some momentum and get another winning streak going.

FRIDAY NIGHT TRIOS - WEEK #8 RESULTS

ELM Trio: 3 - Les Beauzolais: 4
We came out hot in the first game, missing our season's high score by only two pins. Unfortunately, it was all downhill from there. After we won the first game, Les Beauzolais (minus Flaco) took the next two. Our margin of victory in the first game was enough to earn us the extra point for total pinfall so our record for the night was 3-4.

For the season, we fell to third place with a record of 39-17. The Bowled & The Beautiful swept their opponents and are now in first place at 43-13. Cleo's Trio won 5 of 7 to move past us into second place at 40-16.

FRIDAY NIGHT TRIOS - WEEK #6 RESULTS

Elm Trio: 2 - Cleo's Trio: 5
This was our first week on the losing end. We didn't bowl poorly -- our total pinfall was 18 higher than it was last week when we were 5-2. Nancy and Leroy bowled very well for Cleo's Trio and they took it to us in the first two games. We turned it up in the third game to avoid a sweep but not high enough to grab the point for total pinfall.

Our record for the night was 2-5 which dropped up into a first place tie with The Bowled & The Beautiful at 31-11.

FRIDAY NIGHT TRIOS - WEEK #5 RESULTS

ELM Trio: 5 - Vacant: 2
We had the vacant team on the schedule which required us to bowl within 45 pins of our team average to avoid a loss. This meant we had to reach 504 for a tie and 505 or higher for a win. Anything below 504 would be a loss. We cleared the 504 hurdle with ease in the first two games but we barely pulled it off in the last one. But as the saying goes, a win is a win.

With the seven points we earned this week, we improved our record for the season to 31-4 as we maintained our hold on first place.

FRIDAY NITE TRIOS - WEEK #4 RESULTS

Elm Trio: 5 - Mile High Club: 2
Entering Week #4, our record was 19-2 which gave us a two-point lead over Highlife Rollers at 17-4. Our opponents this Friday night was Mile High Club with a record of 4-17.

We spotted Mile High Club 47 pins per game in handicap which they didn't need in the first game. We got off to a slow start and they beat us scratch 479-462. With the handicap it was 526-462. Fortunately, we bounced back in the final two games and won by scores of 655-489 and 662-494. We won the point for total pinfall by a score of 1779-1509.

I can testify that Ray is an excellent teacher. Before I met Ray, my average had been hovering around the 170s for years. After some lessons and some new equipment, my average has moved into the 190s. (My present book average is 197.) If you want to improve your bowling, I urge you to get out to Diablo Valley Bowl on Monument Blvd in Concord for these drop-in clinics. Maybe I will see you there. OPENING THE 2013-2014 SEASON

We're off to a hot 19-2 start.
The 2013-2014 season for the Friday Nite Trios at Castro Village Bowl is underway. We opened the new season with Rudy's Hot Mamas and eared a 7-point sweep. It helped that Rudy was a bit off his game, bowling about 125 pins under his average. Whatever the reason, we're happy to break out with a 7-0 record.

ELM TRIO - LEAGUE CHAMPS

ELM Trio 3 - Movin On Up 4
We entered the second half finale with a record of 74-38, one point ahead of Movin On Up and Let It Roll at 73-39. Team 15 was in fourth place at 72-40. As it was a position round, we faced Movin On Up on lanes 1-2 while Let It Roll and Team 15 met on lanes 3-4.

The winner of the second half will face the winner of the first half on sweeper night for the league title. Since we won the first half, a first place finish in the second half would settle the league championship without a match on sweeper night.

Roz's bum shoulder kept her out of action so we were left to face Al and Will with Roz's average of 145. When Eli and I both opened the first frame with pocket 7-10 splits, we wondered if we were destined to bowl for the championship next week. After Will started with six shots buried in the pocket for strikes and Al striking whether he was in the pocket or straight through the nose, it was looking like a certainty. We recovered from the ridiculous splits in the first frame to put up a respectable score of 573 but it wasn't enough. Will's 233 and Al's 190 propelled Movin On Up to a 590-573 win.

Will and Al cooled off a bit in the second game but we still fell short. We had a shot but Larry finished with five straight open frames and I hit another pocket 7-10 split with my first shot in the tenth frame. We wasted Eli's excellent 221 game on a 534-515 defeat. This left us down two games and 36 pins behind for the extra point.

Losing the first two games was the equivalent of boxing's standing eight count. Movin On Up knocked us around but we were still on our feet. The two wins improved their record to 77-39 as ours fell to 74-42. This meant we had to win the final game for two points and outscore them by at least 37 pins to earn the extra point and finish in a tie for first place. Thankfully, Will and Al couldn't find the form they had in the first game. We pulled out the final game 561-515 and won the extra point for total pinfall by a score of 1649-1639. Our score was 3-4 which left us and Movin On Up tied for first place at 77-42.

But that wasn't the end of it. On lanes 3-4, Team 15 prevailed over Let It Roll 5-2. Thus, Team 15 also had a record of 77-42 and we had a three-way tie for first place. The league rules provide for a one-game roll-off to break the tie. After consulting with our league officers, it was decided all three teams would bowl the tie-breaker on lanes 9-10.

Team 15 struggled and fell behind quickly while we and Movin On Up came out hot. In the end, we had the hotter hand even though Al and Will bowled well. I failed to obtain Team 15's score but I have the scores for ourselves and Movin On Up.

WEEK #33 RESULTS

ELM Trio 5 - Mile High Club 2
Last week's 5-2 night against Strike Or Bust bumped us up to second place. Our record of 69-36 placed us one point behind Team 15 who hold first place with a record of 70-35.

This week our opponents were Mile High Club. We won the first two games but slipped badly and suffered a loss in the third. Our margin of victory in the first two games was enough to earn the point for total pinfall. Our score was 5-2 which improved our second half record to 74-38.

Down on lanes 3-4, Honey & The Flaming Bees defeated Team 15 5-2 which dropped them to 72-40. We shot into first place just in time for next week's position round.

WEEK #32 RESULTS

ELM Trio 5 - Mile High Club 2
Shades of week #1 -- we were back on lanes 1-2 to take on Strike Or Bust. It went better for us this time. We won the first two games and the extra point for total pinfall for a 5-2 night. We boosted our second half record to 69-36 and moved into second place, one game behind Team 15.

Next week we have Mile High Club on the schedule. We will have to take care of our own business and hope for some help from Honey & The Flaming Bees who will face Team 15. With a little luck, we'll be in first or second place for the position round in week #34.

WEEK #31 RESULTS

ELM Trio 5 - Ricky's Sports 2
Our sweep of Kalifornia Roll last week moved us from fourth place to a tie for second place with Let It Roll. We remained four points behind Team 15 who held onto first place with a sweep of their own. Movin On Up moved on up to fourth place.

For Week #31 we matched up with Ricky's Sports who were in sixth place. We struggled in the first game and lost by 41 pins (475-516). Only Eli carried his average. Eli found his next gear in the second game and it was enough to carry us to a win by a mere 7 pins (497-490). The rest of us came to life for the finale and we won the rubber game of the series by 83 pins (580-497). This was enough to earn us the point for total pinfall (1552-1503) and a score of 5-2 for the night. Our second-half record improved to 64-34.

On our way out, Will of Movin On Up informed us that Team 12 swept Team 15.  That dropped Team 15's record to 63-35 and put them a game behind us. It's possible we're now in first place. It depends on the how Movin On Up and Let It Roll bowled. If Let It Roll swept Thermy Trio, they now have sole possession of first place. If they went 5-2, we are tied with them. Anything less than that and they fell behind us. If Movin On Up swept Kalifornia Roll, they're a game ahead of us. Anything less than a sweep and they remain behind us.

WEEK #30 RESULTS

ELM Trio 7 - Kalifornia Roll 0
We enjoyed another good week, averaging 183 as a team. The result was a sweep as we continued our push toward the top of the standings.

We entered the night in fourth place with a second-half record of 52-32. Team 15 was setting the pace at 56-28 and taking on the Thermy Trio. With our sweep, our record improved to 59-32. If Bob Seright's crew had one of their hot nights, it's possible we caught Team 15. Let It Roll (54-28) and Team 12 (53.5-28.5) opposed each other tonight so the odds are we passed at least one of them.

WEEK #29 RESULTS

ELM Trio 5 - Guzzlers 2
We took on The Guzzlers and though we scored higher than we did the previous two weeks, we weren't able to pull off another sweep. We won the first two games rather handily but the Guzzlers got hot at the end and took the third game. We earned the point for total pinfall and a record of 5-2 for the evening.

Our second half record improved to 52-32 which should help us in the standings. The first and second place teams played each other but I wasn't able to learn the outcome before I left. I hope they split with the second place team having the 4-3 edge. That would allow us to gain two points on the leader and one point on the second place team.

WEEK #28 RESULTS

ELM Trio 7 - Honey & The Flaming Bees 0
Eli's hot hand carried us to a sweep which improved our second half record to 47-30. We're creeping back up toward the top of the standings as the season winds down to its conclusion.

We have five weeks left to catch up. There will be a position round in Week #34 on May 10th. Our sweeper will be on May 17th. The winner of the first half (us) will bowl the winner of the second half to determine the league championship. Naturally, our aim is to win the second half as well so we can coast on sweeper night.

WEEK #27 RESULTS

ELM Trio 4 - Movin' On Up 3
This week, we were about as consistent as a team can be with game scores of 524-522-526. It translated to a loss, a tie, and a win with us grabbing the point for total pinfall by a narrow margin of 14 pins.

We entered the night in 6th place with a record of 36-27. Now we're at 40-30. The teams in 1st & 2nd place and 3rd & 5th place opposed each other this week. The 4th and 5th place teams were only one point ahead of us. There's a good chance we passed at least one of them or gained on the leader. We'll see next Friday where we stand relative to the league. We're in good shape to make another run at first place.

WEEK #26 RESULTS

ELM Trio 5, Sumbitch 2
We came close to a second consecutive sweep but we let the third game get away from us. We did well enough in the first two games to earn the point for total pinfall. Though a sweep would have been better, a 5-2 record for the night isn't bad.

Our record in the second half is now 36-27. Entering the night we were in a tie for seventh place, one point out of sixth and two points out of fourth. We'll see Friday if we gained any ground.

WEEK #25 RESULTS

ELM Trio 7 - Team 16 0
We had the invisible team on our schedule this week and the scores suggest we like bowling at a brisk pace. We topped our previous high series of 1720 by 70 pins and just missed breaking the 1800 mark. BTW, that's also the league's high series. We earned a sweep which boosted our record to 31-25 and should help us regain some of the ground we lost last week.

WEEK #24 RESULTS

ELM Trio 1 - Thermy Trio 6
We had a chance to move within striking distance of Thermy Trio who presently occupy first place. However, except for Eli, we came out flat. Despite Eli's best efforts, we managed only a tie in the second game to earn a single point for the night. Our record fell to 24-25 and we dropped another five points away from first place. We'll have to pick up the pace if we have designs and winning the second half title.

We suffered through a slump in the first half before coming out of it by winning six consecutive sweeps. Can lightning strike twice in the same place?

WEEK #23 RESULTS

ELM Trio 7 - OJ's 0
We had the OJ's on the schedule this week but Ofelia was absent so we faced only the J's. The sweep we suffered at the hands of the Hot Mamas last week dropped our record from 16-12 to 16-19 and dumped us from fifth place to twelfth in the standings. A team with designs on first place can't afford too many nights like that. Fortunately, Eli wasn't the only one bowling well for us this week and we earned a sweep of our own. Sorry about that OJ's.

We improved our record to 23-19 which should move us back up at least a couple of places in the standings. We won't know for certain until we obtain the league's stat sheet next week.

WEEK #22 RESULTS

Hot Mamas 7 - ELM Trio 0
The Hot Mamas were indeed hot but only Eli was up to the task of keeping up with them. As a result, we were victims of a 7-point sweep. Linda was absent but Peggy and Kat were outstanding with series 52 and 99 points above their respective averages. Combine their scores with the 102 pins per game in handicap we were spotting them and we couldn't afford to have two of us off our games on the same night. It was a shame to waste Eli's excellent series.

WEEK #19 - #21 RESULTS

I haven't been keeping up with the blog very well for the last month. Mostly it was because I was ill. My health has returned but lately I've just been bowling nearly every night. I'll try to keep up the rest of the way.

A stretch of five consecutive sweeps propelled us to the league's top record for the first half of the season. A sixth consecutive sweep in the first week of the second half (week #19) gave us an early lead. However, our string of consecutive sweeps was snapped in week #20 as we managed only one win over Team 15. Our record for the night was 2-5. In week #21, we also managed only one win against Team 12 but we pulled out the point for total pinfall to make it a 3-4 night.

WEEK #18 RESULTS

Elm Trio 7 - Movin' On Up 0
Eli's hot hand continued with another 600 series that carried us to our fifth consecutive sweep. Movin' On Up bowled well enough to win the second game but it just happened to be when we broke 600 -- the third time we did so this season.

How long can we keep this streak going?

WEEK #17 RESULTS

Elm Trio 7 - O.J.'s 0
It was the position round and consecutive sweeps over the past three weeks moved us up from the middle of the pack to second place in the standings. We found ourselves matched up with the first place OJ's who held a one game lead over us.

When we last met the OJ's a month ago, they got out their brooms and swept us. This time we returned the favor. Eli scored another 600 series and Larry scored his first 500 series of the season as we swept our way back into first place. Our string of consecutive sweeps (the good kind) now stands at four!

I think we can officially declare our slump over. Tonight our opponent was Sumbitch and we earned our third consecutive sweep, though in highly unusual fashion. The first game was won with a score of 457. Such a low score would usually produce a loss but both teams started poorly. We were able to pull out a win by seven pins.

That bad game was too much for Flaco Jones. He packed up his stuff in disgust and split. Sumbitch had to use his average the rest of the way. We posted scores of 589 and 567 in the following games so his team needed above average scores from him  and he wasn't there to deliver them.

Next week we have a position round. We were in third place entering tonight's games while the two teams ahead of us played each other. The odds are we passed at least one of them with our sweep. I expect we will be bowling on lanes 1-2 with a good shot at ending the night back in first place.
